«The pleasure and
freedom of winter sports in an open space where everyone can express themself
whatever their level»
Originally from
the Chamonix Valley, I spent the winters in Courchevel 1550 until 1974. The
freedom of movement offered by snow sports has never left me. I was 6 when I
moved to the 3 valleys with my father. After training at the Courchevel sports
club, I returned to Chamonix and took part in a cross-country ski race, and
joined the Chamonix club section, followed by 6 years on the Mont-Blanc
committee.
For several years
I participated in the championship of France, then, I joined the Nordic
combined section and was recruited in the biathlon section.
However, I have
always continued to practice alpine ski and decided then to start the diploma
to become an instructor.
Son of a mountain
guide, I was born into a profession that I made my own.
During my first
seasons of teaching I changed resorts (stations) every winter, which allowed me
to become familiar with different ski areas.
I spent a season
in Graubünden, I was able to discover Valbella Lenzerheid, St Moritz, Engelberg. Followed
by seasons in Les Arcs, Avoriaz, La Plagne, Les Deux Alpes and Alpes d'Huez. I have
fantastic memories of each station and an enrichment that I continue to supply
when I have the opportunity.
In 1988 I heard
the rumours of the desire to create the station of La Tania, and in September
1992, I made my request to Fernand MACHET (director of the ski school) to be a
part of it.
I have taught and
shared my passion for 33 years now and with an educational approach that stems
from a good understanding of the student's, their expectations and abilities.
Even if the learning fundamentals are defined, each individual will have a
different perception of the environment, the slope, the speed, the sensation of
sliding on a changing platform of snow.
The role of the instructor
is to share with students the pleasure and experience of skiing or snowboarding
in an open space, where everyone can express themselves whatever their level.
My motivation
over all these winters remains strong. My greatest satisfaction is when each
student trusts me to discover another approach, and feels more at ease in the
practice of their winter sport and that the progress they achieved now offers new
possibilities in a place that would have seemed impossible to them before.
My favourite
spots vary according to the weather, the quality of snow, the amount of skiers,
as the same piste can be so different. My favorite thing is to have never skied
in the same place and to discover new routes every time.
Where are the
most beautiful slopes in the world? Just follow the world cup circuit, Val d'Isère,
Kitzbühel, for example. My favourites for different reasons, include the Couloir
de Corbet at Jackson Hole, the piste de Parpan (for having prepared it), Didier
Bouvet obtained his title in1986. The verte aux Houches (having skied it many
times and in many conditions). The trail from Mont Fort to Verbier (for the powder
descent). The Robert Blanc in Les Arcs (because it never lacks snow), La Jean
Blanc in Courchevel (because of memories from my childhood).
However the one I
practice the most is the begining track of the Grenouillère in La Tania.
Other than being
a ski instructor, I am a craftsman working with wood and leather, I like to
recycle materials to give them a new life.
I grew up in the
mountains, where all seasons provide something different; light, colors,
atmosphere. In winter a snowfall with real flakes still remains a magical sight.
